Nobuta wo Produce

I’ve read a lot of preference to Nobuta wo Produce so I was wondering what’s with this Japanese Drama. As I read its plot, something caught my attention that sealed my desire to watch it. I’ll just go and read the plot again..

Aahh.. I think it was the unlikely collaboration that gave birth to friendship between the Shuuji and Akira.

When I first saw Kiritani Shuuji (Kamenashi Kazuya), I wondered what was cool about him. It was only after watching more episodes when I realized why people find him cool. I didn’t particularly like him, because of what he’s keeping from Uehara Mariko (Toda Erika). He had his reasons of course. But I liked him when he’s at home, even his crazy interaction with his little brother Koji (Nakajima Yuto).
I was suspecting that Nakajima is also from Johnny’s Entertainment. When it was confirmed, I got amused. Isn’t it nice to have worked with two of your agency-senpai: Kamenashi and Yamashita? Knowing how big these names have become, I think Nakajima was proud to work with them. Just a thought I had during my realization.

As for Kusano Akira (Yamashita Tomohisa), I was actually surprised with him. Those waving of arms and all, caused me to drop my jaw. He looked really silly but too funny for me to hate. It was also obvious that there’s more that what these two characters were showing in school so I just tuned in and waited what would unfold before me. Besides, there was that look in Akira’s face that unmasked his heart. He may appear to be carefree but he’s got a lot of thoughts inside his head too.

I’m glad I didn’t judge Akira. I’m glad I got curious with him. I love his craziness, especially when he pouts close to Shuuji and when he does his trademark “Kon!” He had another version of it; same hand gesture but just different tagline, which actually reminded me of Momo. I love his surprise reaction when he admitted to the “Truth Man.” It was actually funny because he wasn’t particularly asked with such thing. He just spit it out. But I liked it.

It seems like I got too absorbed with the lead male characters that I kind of forgot Kotani Nobuko or simply “Nobuta” (Horikita Maki). I felt bad for her when she was being bullied but I admire her kind heart. I think there was no need to exert much effort to carry out her character. Just be awkward and hola! I still haven’t found a character Horikita portrayed that has wowed me. Hopefully soon.

There were a lot of scenes that made me laugh while watching this 2005 J-Drama. My goodness. I am almost 8 years late. But then, “Better late than never.” I still caught up. But Gackt! Yamashita and Horikita didn’t seem to age. I can’t say the same with Kamenashi though because this is the first time I’ve seen him and I’m no longer into J-Pop.

Nobuta wo Produce is a funny drama, but like most J-Dramas, it also had morals in it. And I liked how those “proverbs” were said by one of the three and not by an adult, though I have to make the Vice-Principal Catherine (Natsuki Mari) and the Bookstore owner as exception. Shuuji had a lot of those though I think it was Akira who showed the most.

Random:
*That “scary staring dog” was not scary at all.

*Those Akira pouts are cute and funny. There were actually times or scenes when I thought Yamashita was doing an ad-lib. And those “Akira Shock!” moments were just hilarious. I love them. Even the “cursed split ends” moment was just too crazy. And who has forgotten about the curry bread? That was ridiculously funny!

*The view of light piercing through the clouds from the rooftop was amazing.
*Episode 9. When Akira brought the telly to Class 2-B, I was like “Seriously?” I was surprised that he bothered to bring the telly to the class. Then it suddenly hit me, so I was like “Chotto matte!” Yamashita was carrying a telly on his shoulder! It may have been removed of its insides though, but if not.. what a strength!
There was another episode when Akira displayed his physical strength. I think that episode came before episode 9. So why was I surprised? Funny eh!
*I think Yamashita was good in acting asleep. It was at the “tofu house,” where they all fell asleep.
