The Virgin Queen

I am no master of European history, not even the English history albeit being famous around the globe. Even so, it was fascinating to have watched a part of the English history in a different light, or so I thought. What’s more pleasurable was having done so with regard to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, known to everyone as The Virgin Queen.

There is no recollection of mine regarding the other films that featured the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. I believe watching another would be fascinating. With Anne-Marie Duff portraying the great queen, I found it somehow easier to understand some things or, to the very least know some things that have escaped me. Perhaps the gravity of her times were beyond my understanding before. Now that I have added years to my life, some things have also been added with clarity.

As everyone knows, Queen Elizabeth I had no master over her. I was not surprised when I watched the scene when she declared such. She was so true to her character, but not without pity. I lament the loss of opportunity for Robert Dudley and Elizabeth I. Some might say it was tragic, but for me to say so would be an insult to the character of the Queen. Again, I claim no mastery for this thing. It just seemed like the Queen Elizabeth I that I saw in The Virgin Queen was able to reach out to my mind and heart.

“I know I have the body of a weak, feeble woman;
but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too…
I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge,
and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field.”
